I don’t know about you, but I have been drooling over all the delicious apple recipes this season! I was hoping to join the party this year, but it hasn’t happened yet. I am hoping to break out my little pie bird in November, and make an apple/apple inspired pie. I am hosting a birthday party in mid-November, and it will be a great opportunity to make a couple of pies, and have extra mouths to help eat them up 😉 In the meantime, I thought I would share an apple fritter recipe I came up with last year. My apple fritters are more traditional, and I have added panko for an extra crunch, and paired them with a yummy cinnamony (Is that even a word? It should be!) syrup. My kids love these fritters and they are a great alternative to a heavier apple dessert. I hope you add these to all the other apple desserts you may be trying this fall.
Notes
#1 Serve these fritters with a scoop of ice cream on top, or even a little whipped cream!
#2 Serve the apple fritters for brunch or as a breakfast treat.
#3 Store the left-over syrup in the fridge for other yummy uses. It should hold up for several days or more. Warm before using.
#4 Refrigerate any left over fritters for up to a couple of days.
Ingredients
Fritters
- 2 apples (sweeter varieties work well, like Fuji apples)
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 cups panko (Japanese style bread crumbs)
- 2 Tbsp cinnamon (not used all at once)
- 5 Tbsp sugar (not used all at once)
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3 eggs
- 1/3 cup milk
- neutral oil for pan frying
Syrup
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
Instructions
Fritters
- Mix together 3 Tbsp sugar and 1 Tbsp cinnamon and set aside.
- Whisk together the flour, remaining cinnamon and sugar, and salt, until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs, until combined.
- Fill a third container with panko.
- Peel the apples and slice in 1/4 inch thick slices (you can core the apples before you slice them, or use a knife to cut out the seeds and core from each slice).
- Set up a dredging station in this order: apples slices, flour mixture, milk-egg mixture, panko, and an empty plate.
- Preheat the oil over medium heat. Place enough oil to completely cover the bottom of the fritters and part of the sides (I use an enameled cast iron 5 qt braiser, which takes 1 cup of oil).
- Follow these steps to prepare your apples for frying (one apple at a time): 1. Place in the flour mixture to get a light dusting ; 2. Dunk in the egg-milk mixture; 3. Place back in the flour mixture, coating well; 4. Dunk once more in the egg mixture.; 5. Finally, place in the panko, coating well. Repeat with the remaining apple slices.
- Once the oil is pre-heated, place the apples in and fry until golden brown on each side. When the apples are done, remove with a slotted spoon and place on a couple of paper towels to catch the excess grease. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture generously all over.
Syrup
- Add all of the ingredients to a pot (I use stainless) over medium heat. Stir as needed until it comes to a boil. Let it continue to boil for about 2 minutes, watching it closely and stirring as needed (turn down heat if needed).
- Drizzle the fritters with syrup and enjoy!

Apples are one of the most common fruits in the UK, but they still tend to be a favourite for many of us. They have so many uses. Your fritter recipe looks and sounds wonderful and I think I’d like mine hot with ice cream, please. 🙂 I’ve never heard of panko, so I’ll look out for that.
That’s interesting. I agree, they really do and are so delicious! Thank you for the kind words Millie! Panko is a Japanese style of bread crumbs and they add a wonderful crunch to fried or oven-fried foods. They are made from bread without the crusts typically.
Oh apple fritters – wonderful c
