It’s Tips for Tuesday! Each Tuesday this month, I will be re-sharing a Thanksgiving recipe from last year, and will have a brand new recipe each Thursday.
This week’s Thanksgiving re-post is Chocolate Orange Frosted Cinnamon Sugar Cookies! These cookies are a perfect addition to a Thanksgiving dessert spread, because they are small enough to enjoy, but packed with flavor. They have a mild cinnamon flavor and are topped with an orange and chocolate buttery icing. I hope you enjoy this recipe and stay tuned on Thursday for another Thanksgiving inspired cookie! Happy Thanksgiving planning!

Notes
#1 You can make the flour mixture ahead of time. You can also make the dough ahead of time, and keep in the fridge for up to 2 days before using. The dough will hold up in the freezer for a few weeks, just let it thaw first.
#2 Make these into sandwich cookies, by rolling out a little thinner before cutting. When cooled, place the icing in between two cookies. Yum!
Ingredients
Cookies
- 2 cups all purpose flour (I used unbleached)
- 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbsp. milk (2% or higher milkfat preferred)
- 1 tsp. real vanilla extract
- oil for greasing pan
Icing
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 1/2 tsp. real orange extract
Special Equipment
- parchment paper
- 2 in. diameter biscuit or cookie cutter
Instructions
Cookies
- Sift the flour, cinnamon, and baking powder together and then add salt, and whisk until combined. Place the softened butter and sugar in the mixer and cream them together, by mixing on high (start on low until sugar is incorporated) until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes). Scrape the bowl as needed throughout this process. Add the egg and mix until incorporated, and repeat with the vanilla and then the milk. While the mixer is on low, steadily add the flour mixture. Mix until the dough is formed. Grab two pieces of parchment paper and place the cookie dough on one. Place the other piece of parchment paper on top. Roll the dough out while covered with the parchment paper. This will cut down on any mess. Roll out until you reach 1/4 inch thickness. Cover well and place flat in the fridge for at least an hour. I try and let mine sit overnight in the fridge if I can.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Remove the cookie dough from the fridge and remove the top piece of parchment paper. Cut out your circles and place on the baking sheet and in the oven. They should be done in 18 to 20 minutes, and be lightly golden on the bottom and around the edges. Place on cooling racks. Once they are cooled, place them on a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet or pan (make sure it will fit in the freezer for a later step).
Icing
- Place the chocolate chips and butter in a double broiler over medium heat (break the butter up a bit first). Stir often until smooth and melted, and then remove from heat. Add the orange extract and stir well.
Icing the Cookies
- Take a small spoon and carefully drop the chocolate sauce in the middle of a cookie and smooth the icing outward, until the top of the cookie is almost covered. Repeat with each cookie. Once complete, place cookies in the freezer for 15 minutes for the icing to harden. Remove and store in a sealed container in a single layer (will keep for a couple of days). Enjoy!
Note:
- These cookies are best the day after they have been iced, because the icing helps soften them. I like the cookies being harder when I apply the chocolate, so they hold up.

yes very nice! I have not planned Antonia!! all I know is everyone is coming here! haha
I understand that! Blogging has helped me become more of a food planner around the holidays. Before that, I waited for inspiration to hit me, which could have been the day before 😀
I am horrible at planning as in, I plan write lists and lists for my lists!! But, we did not celebrate holidays for years! so this is new for us!! We had it at mom’s house for years and now me! so I am kind of in limbo or avoiding it? my kids are not used to the foods and so I am trying to bring a little spice into things and change things a bit.
Haha…that is too funny. I didn’t think about that. Change is good…I hope they enjoy 🙂
yes thanks! 🙂
I am in love with the combo. Cookies look so yummy. Wish I could grab some right now 🙂
Thanks Kushi! Wouldn’t it be nice to reach through the screen and grab food? Have a great day 🙂
