It’s Tips for Tuesday!
This week’s tip: Make your own whipped cream!
Whipped cream is super easy to make and is actually just cream whipped! It is one of those easy ‘from scratch’ foods what will wow your guests and add something special to your desserts. Whipped cream is versatile and delicious. It adds that needed touch to many desserts, from pies to pudding to cakes to strawberry shortcake. Stay tuned on Thursday for a super easy pie topped with homemade whipped cream .
Don’t settle for whipped topping, which is an oil and dairy based concoction, or even whipped cream in a can, which includes corn syrup and additives. You can always purchase an aerosol can using nitrous oxide as a propellant, but they can be pricey. I prefer the cheaper and more versatile whipping method.
Notes
#1 Use different extracts. A great combo is a vanilla and a little orange.
#2 Make it the night before. If I am having a party, I usually make it the night before and it holds up very well. You may have to slightly whisk. I usually wait to top the dessert until close to the event or even serving time, depending on your dessert.
#3 You can add a small amount of dry pudding mix to stabilize, if you desire.
#4 Use it to ice cakes. I love icing cakes with it. You have to store it in the fridge, but nothing is wrong with a cold cake! It makes a light and wonderful frosting.
Ingredients
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 5 tbsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
Instructions
- Add cold cream and vanilla to mixer with wire whip attachment and set to high. Don't forget to cover it up!
- Once it slightly begins to thicken, steadily add the sugar (I like to stop and scrape the bowl once the sugar is incorporated).
- Stop and check the whipped cream once you see it begin to thicken. The whipped cream is ready when it will hold its form (note: you may have to check it several times the first time you make it). Be careful not to over mix or it will separate into butter and buttermilk.
- Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 days or add directly to your dessert or recipe.
Homemade whipped cream is one of my favorite dessert additions! I really love your idea of using it to decorate a cake. I never even thought of that but now I’ll have to give it a try!
Thanks Heather! Whipped cream is amazing isn’t it? It makes such a wonderful and light frosting, and goes with almost any cake. I hope you like it 🙂
