Avgolemono (Greek Egg and Lemon Soup)

Jump to recipe

My family came down with our first really bad cold of the season.  It started with my daughter when we were out of town, and by the time we got back home, we were all sick.  Don’t you just hate colds?  It reminded me that I need some really good soup, and there is no better soup for me, than Avgolemono.  It is a Greek soup with chicken broth, rice, lemon, and topped with a lemony egg foam.  My mom used to make it for us growing up, and it was sheer comfort in a bowl.  Imagine a layer of egg foam, with a warm soup underneath, made of lemon, rice, and egg-thickened chicken broth.  There is honestly nothing like it.  I first shared it two years ago, and decided this is the perfect time to share it again.  I hope you give it a try, the next time you are looking for a comforting and healthy soup!

I am excited to bring my soup to Fiesta Friday #194!  Your co-hosts this week are Petra @ Food Eat Love and Vanitha @ Curry and Vanilla.

Ugh! I’m sorry you’re all sick with colds. I hope the soup helps you get on the mend and well soon!

I’ve never tried this soup. It sounds very interesting. I love soup so I’d give it try. I think I’d like to try it in a restaurant before making it though.

There’s a Greek place I frequent when over the hill. I wonder if they have this soup? I’ll keep it mind when over there and have a hankerin for Greek food. It might be the perfect starter. 🙂

Your soup sounds so unusual, Antonia. I would never think to add lemon and egg, but I can imagine how good it is, especially when under the weather. I hope you’re all feeling better. It’s that time of year. 🙂 <3

It really is different, but so good. I ate it all the time growing up, and it was one my of favorite Greek dishes my mom would make. She was so good at getting the egg foam perfect on top. Eating it while I am sick takes me back! Thank you, we are getting there! Have a beautiful weekend Diana!

I have heard of this soup but never tried it before. After looking at the ingredients I would say it is just as good as good ole chicken soup when you don’t feel well. Rice is easy on your stomach, lots of broth and of course we all know the benefits of lemon. For awhile I was having a glass of water with a little lemon juice added first thing in the morning 🙂 Glad you are all feeling better – not fun for sure!

You have to try it, it is so good. I agree, it is just perfect when you have a cold. I have done that too, and also apple cider vinegar with my water. I really need to start doing that again. Thanks so much and have a great weekend Judi! 😀

Wow, that soup! And the foam! I’ve had avgolemono several times; I’ve even posted a recipe for it on my older blog, but never without the egg foam. I have to talk to my friend about this. He’s from Greece and pretty much all my knowledge about Greek food comes from him. I hope everybody is feeling better! <3

Thank you so much Angie! This is the way they made it in my mom’s village in Greece, growing up. I know it can be made many different ways, sometimes even including chicken and veggies. My mom told me this is a very traditional recipe, and that the chicken should be added afterwards or eaten on the side. She would always whisk her eggs, but I have found great results with an electric beater. Thank you, we are! Have a fantastic weekend!
