Lina at Lin’s recipes had the great idea to host a recipe exchange this month. I was excited to participate and just had to try Julia’s Red Onion Savoury Jam at My Red Page. I was very intrigued by the jam, because I am an avid onion lover. The idea of adding sugar and acid to one of my favorite veggies was irresistible! It was super easy to make and it made the whole house smell of herbs and wine. The smell was truly intoxicating, no pun intended 😉 The jam turned out delicious and has such wonderful layers of flavor. It is sweet, acidic, earthy, and has a wonderful afterkick from the chili flakes. After tasting it, I decided I had to make some bread! I made some of my Honey Wheat Flaxseed Bread. Let me tell you, it was an amazing combination. I sat down with a piece of bread still warm from the oven slathered in this delicious and flavorful onion jam, paired with a shot of espresso. What an afternoon snack! If you like intense flavors, you have to try Julia’s Savoury Red Onion Jam. You will not be sorry. I am thinking of pairing it with a grilled turkey burger next…yum! Also, if you are looking for a delicious homemade bread with a little extra health, please try my Honey Wheat Flaxseed bread.
Thanks again to Lina for creating and hosting this challenge!
Ingredients
- Recipe from My Red Page
- 1.1 lb. (1/2 kg) red onion (approx 1 large onion)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cups red wine
- 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar (original recipes notes white will work too)
- 2 Tbsp olive oil (I used extra virgin)
- 2 tsp. thyme (fresh or dried)
- 1/2 tsp. salt (or more to taste)
- 1/2 tsp. chili flakes
- 2 bay leaves (I didn't have any on hand, so I had to omit)
Instructions
- Chop the onions into uniform pieces,
- Heat the oil over medium heat in a pot large enough to hold all the ingredients (A pot with a large base works best, to ensure the jam reduces in the last step). Add the onions and let them cook for a few minutes.
- Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Add the wine and vinegar, followed by the thyme, chili flakes, salt, and bay leaves. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce down to a simmer. Allow the mixture to simmer for 45 minutes, or until it thickens (this will depend largely on the width and type of pot you are using).
- Once it is done, let it cool and either use it immediately or store in the fridge. The original recipe states it will remain good for up to 2 weeks if stored properly in the fridge. Enjoy!

I’ve recently enjoyed putting jam on my english muffins in the mornings and this recipe definitely piques my interest! Does it have a mixture of savory and sweet, or is it more savory? I’ve never made my own jam before and I’m thinking about bookmarking this one for future use!
I love English muffins and this would be super tasty! It is pretty sweet and a little sweeter than I expected. However, the sweet and savory are nicely balanced. It has some heat at the end, so it depends on whether you would like that for breakfast. I hope you get a chance to try it 😀
This sounds so good and yummy !!! I have never tried to make jam, so this will be a first 🙂
Thanks Lynne! It is very tasty and I hope you get a chance to try it! I haven’t made too many jams either, and this was super easy 😀
