With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to take some time this week to honor two very special mothers in my life, my mother and my mother-in-law. Today, my mother-in-law was kind enough to guest post, and on Thursday I will be sharing one of my mother’s special dishes.
I am thrilled to have my mother-in-law guest posting today. She is sharing a delicious and special dish and also her mouth watering photo. This is the ultimate comfort food! She is an amazing cook and so was her beautiful mother. I will turn it over to her 😀
Ethel’s Country Style Steak
This is a recipe my Mom, Ethel, made a lot for our family. I learned to make it later on when I was married, and my family loved it too! When she first made it she didn’t add tomatoes, but one day she decided to try it, and it was quite good. It gives a little different flavor to the gravy. Everyone loves it so much, I decided to share it today on my daughter-in-law’s blog for Mother’s Day. She asked me to guest post to honor me, and I also wanted to honor my amazing Mom for all the wonderful recipes she taught me and shared with me. I am now passing some of them on to my daughter and daughter-in-law, in hopes they will pass it on to their daughters one day too. ☺
I like to serve it over or with rice, and a side of butter beans or peas, and homemade biscuits. It is a delicious and filling meal. I hope you enjoy it as much as our family does and did.
Ingredients
- 2 ½ lbs. round steak or sirloin steak
- ½ onion sliced (optional)
- 1 can tomatoes (whole or diced)
- 4 Tbsp all purpose flour and more for the meat
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 cups water (approx.)
- extra virgin olive oil
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Slice the beef into individual 'steaks.' Place a cup or so of flour in a plate. Season the meat, with salt and pepper, and dip it in the flour, covering well. Add olive oil to a large cast iron dutch oven or other large dutch oven to brown the meat in.
- Once the oil is heated, add the meat and brown both sides. Once browned, remove from the pan and let rest. (if you like onions, slice a half of an onion and add to the meat, while browning).
- Using the same pan, create your gravy from the meat drippings. You will need to add 4 Tbsp butter and 4 Tbsp flour to the pan. Whisk for a few minutes and cook on medium heat to remove the flour taste and allow it to thicken. Then add the water, while whisking. Bring the gravy to a boil, while continuing to whisk (If the gravy becomes too thin, add more flour by mixing a Tbsp flour to 1/2 c water and whisking until smooth. Then add to the gravy. If it is too thick, add a little water.). Once it is at your desired consistency, add salt and pepper to taste.
- Reduce the heat to low, and place the steak back in the pan, along with the can of tomatoes.
- You can also add a little Worcestershire Sauce and it will give the gravy a great flavor and darken the gravy a bit too.
- Cook on low for about an hour or until it is tender, checking on it periodically and stir around. Enjoy!
A perfect recipe to pass on to your family and now us. Thanks for sharing… 🙂
Thank you Judi! I agree, it is a wonderful recipe 😀
Rice instead of potatoes is different! My M-i-L used to make something similar. We call it ketchup steak. My husband grew up on it and my M-i-L taught me how to make it. I changed it a bit to suit our tastes, but the base is the same. We use ketchup not tomatoes for the gravy, and we use a pressure cooker instead of a dutch oven.
Great image, and thoughtful and delicious way to honor your Mother-i-Law Antonia!
Thank you Deborah! I really like the use of rice with it. My husband grew up on this too. It is such a delicious dish, and the meat is just perfect. That’s interesting you used ketchup…sounds yummy. I like the idea of the pressure cooker too. It can make meat so tender. I was really happy to be able to honor her this way. She is a fantastic cook with a wealth of delicious and traditional dishes from her mother. I feel honored to be able to share this. She took the photo and I thought she did a great job!
I call it peasant food, but it’s so hearty, and good it’s comfort food. My son loves it. When he went away to college he wanted the recipe and now he makes it for himself from time to time.
Yes, ketchup. My mother-in-law’s was super simple; just a gravy of ketchup, water, salt, and pepper. I add Worcestershire sauce, paprika, dry mustard, salt, and pepper, and sometime a little brown sugar. I use potatoes. I throw it all in the pressure cooker after searing the meat. I love one pot dishes! 🙂
I agree, it is so hearty and very comforting. It’s wonderful your son makes it for himself. I am sure it reminds him of home. I like the addition of brown sugar and dry mustard…it sounds wonderful! I am with you on one pot dishes, there is nothing better 🙂
What a gorgeous meal and a beautiful way to honor your mother in law! I love this post!
