It’s time for Tuesday Tips and Tidbits!
Have you ever tried course ground corn to make your grits, instead of the hominy variety? It is the same type of grind used to make polenta, but cooks in only 5 minutes. Several years ago, I decided to give it a try, and my family just loved it. I just had to reshare this tip, because I get so excited when I find food that is minimally processed with minimal ingredients. You can’t beat a product that contains only ground corn, and is as good if not better than the normal hominy grits you find in the store. Another great thing about this product, is that you can cook it in 5 minutes to make grits or around 20 minutes to make polenta. I love these grits with or without cheese and paired with a fried egg. We sometimes eat this for dinner and throw in green beans as another side. Give it a try if you like grits. They are creamy and delicious. I make the grits according to package directions, but I like to add extra virgin olive oil and sometimes cheese.
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 2/3 cup corn grits
- 1/2 tsp. salt (or to taste)
- 1 Tbsp olive oil (I use extra virgin)
- 2 oz. cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Bring the water to boil over medium heat. Stir in the corn grits and let it return to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring as needed.
- Stir in olive oil, salt, and cheese if desired.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
I have never tried this before! thanks for sharing!

Grits! I haven’t had grits in forever! Probably because the kids don’t like them. This is inspiring me to make them again and have the kids re-try them. Yum!!
You are welcome Cynthia 🙂 Our little ones didn’t like them before, but like them now when I put cheese in them. They are a great side. I hope you are having a nice week!
Thanks, so far so good. I hope your week is nice too! I think I will try again with grits. They are going on the grocery list!
Thank you, it is! No colds this week, so we are doing well 😀 Awesome, I hope you like them!

Grits are a Southern dish and Gene loved them 🙂
They are wonderful, aren’t they Judi? I am sure that Gene knew his southern food and enjoyed all the comfort in a bowl of grits 🙂
Hi Antonia, thanks for such an interesting post. I am not familiar to corn grits at all, but do know polenta. You know me, I am willing to try anything, so if I see them around, will try. Hope all is well with you. 🙂
You are so sweet Lynne 😀 I hope you get a chance to try them. Thank you, we are doing well, and I hope you are too. 😀
When I was younger my grandma used to make grits for me every morning! Your post took me on a trip down memory lane Antonia 🙂 A couple months ago I got the kind from the store that you just add water to… absolutely horrible, ugh. Some things are just better made from scratch!
What nice memories Heather 😀 I love how food can evoke special memories. I am with you on the instant grits…not good. These are great because they only take 5 minutes to cook. Happy Wednesday!
