Calling All Pies

Pie Bird

It’s time for Tuesday Tips and Tidbits!

This week I want to highlight a pie bird I received as a Christmas gift, and to ask for ideas on what pie to make with it!

I received a wonderful Christmas gift from my mother-in-law, a beautiful deep purple pie bird.  It is amazing how one little gift can make you so happy.  It was so sweet of her to get me such a thoughtful gift, and I also have my daughter to thank.  A few months ago, my little girl and I were watching a Good Eats’ episode on apple pie.  I mentioned how I would love to have a pie bird, and she remembered and told my mother-in-law.  I was so touched that my sweet girl could be so thoughtful and that she really listens to me.  She is only 7, so I was overwhelmed that she would have remembered.  She is growing up so fast.  I always look forward to my mother-in-law’s gifts anyway, because she always gets me the coolest kitchen tools and cookbooks.  So, this was just wonderful all around!

The bird is ‘perched’ on my windowsill calling me to make a pie.  I just can’t wait.  If anyone has any great pie ideas, I would love to hear from you.  I will be featuring the pie recipe later this month and hopefully I can use my pie bird to make one of your pies 🙂

That’s so funny. I love the nostalgia of those pie birds! I actually had a recipe that called for one, so I bought one on sale. Although I am ashamed to admit I’ve never used it. I should look it up… for both of us!

How interesting that you were given this sweet little gift. I was given one a couple of years ago, and I must confess, I haven’t used it yet. My little bird sits up on a kitchen shelf, tweeting to me whilst I cook! 🙂 I believe they’re used to stop the pastry from sinking on the top of a pie, and they help to allow steam to escape instead of marking the pie wit a fork or knife. They’re mostly used for savoury pies. I think. I would have no use for one in a fruit pie because I always pack them so full of fruit that they don’t ‘sag’. I hope you have lots of fun experimenting with it. 🙂

Too funny Millie…they are a great decoration too 🙂 I am enjoying looking at mine on my kitchen windowsill. Alton Brown uses one for his apple pie recipe, and that is really my extent of knowledge on them. I am really interested in learning more. I hear you on packing your pies full…they are great that way 🙂

Yes, we’re big fruit pie eaters in our house. I’ll look out for your ‘Pie Posts’ to see what other types of pies I can use this chirpy little fellow in. 🙂

How thoughtful of both your daughter and mother-in-law! Maybe a lemon meringue pie? I’ve had a recipe stored away for a lemon meringue pie for quite a while. I saw it on the All Recipes website and it received over 2k reviews so I figure it must be a winner!

Yes, our children are so special, and grow up so quickly, and I think it is so wonderful and thoughtful for her to remember what you had said. What a lovely gift to receive. 🙂

How adorable. I had not heard of pie birds before. I love pies. I can imagine this sweet bird calling to you from where it may have perched on a stalk of rhubarb, so maybe a strawberry-rhubarb pie. 😉
    Hugs!

We bought a pie bird for my mother in law a few years back – but I wonder if she ever uses it. My husband would love one though!! Your daughter is so sweet to remember your words 🙂 and you have a long list of great pies to make!!

The images are wonderful. The pie looks delicious! Now I want a pie bird. 🙂 Does it really work to prevent spill overs?

Thank you so much Deborah! I have made 2 pies so far, and it worked great! As long as your pie is sealed well, it really works. You should get one 😀 Have a great weekend!
