Turmeric is one of my favorite spices. It is incredibly healthy and delicious (to find out more about its amazing health benefits, visit Lyfe Botanicals’ article, ’10 Health Benefits and Uses for Turmeric Curcumin Supplements’). I love it on my popcorn, with olive oil, salt, and garlic powder. The only downfall is the yellow hands, but it’s totally worth it. ;D Last year, I came up with this recipe because I was looking for unique ways to use turmeric. I caramelized some onions and added salt, garlic powder, and turmeric to my chickpea and olive oil combination. When you take a bite, you taste the turmeric, followed my the delectable flavor of sweet caramelized onions. This hummus is a delightful way to add more turmeric to your diet.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas (or 15 oz can drained and rinsed)
- 1/4 large sweet onion
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil plus 2 Tbsp for cooking onions
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. garlic
- 1 tsp. turmeric
- Note: I do not use sesame tahini in my hummus recipes. Growing up, we always made our hummus without tahini, and my mother would refer to it as the 'Greek way'. Try it out...it is really delicious!
Instructions
- Chop the onions.
- Add 2 Tbsp olive oil to a pan over medium high heat. Add the onions once the oil is heated.
- Cook on medium high for 5 to 7 minutes, until the onions just start to brown.
- Turn to low and cook an additional 5 minutes or until they are caramelized.
- Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
- Add the remaining ingredients and caramelized onions (with oil remaining in pan) to a food processor.
- Run until smooth or desired consistency.
- Serve immediately or keep in a covered container in the refrigerator for several days.

This looks beautiful and delicious. I use turmeric in ust about anything including my morning smoothie. The carmelized onions are a great touch!
Thank you so much, Zeba! π I need to try that. Do you have any posted recipes or advice?
I buy fresh turmeric from the local global store. I add it to smoothies with ginger. I also boil it with fresh ginger for a nice tea.
I bet the tea is marvelous! Thank you! π
What a pretty color! I love hummus A LOT & this looks like a lovely version to try. Thanks, Antonia & thanks for co-hosting. Have a lovely weekend!

Yummy! I really must make more flavoured houmous’s! This sounds perfect and I love the colour (not sure what the boys would think though – probably that I was trying to feed them English mustard)! Interesting that you don’t use tahini- I will try that too! π Thanks for sharing and thanks for co-hosting again! π x
Haha, my kids are the same way. It’s too yellow for them, but that leaves more for me and my husband! π I hope you enjoy it! π
